BC Transit, Student Access, Board of Education Participation

In  2016 students presented to an Education Policy and Directions meeting specifying  their disappointment with the changes Transit had made to student pass purchase.

The cancellation of the $35-a-month youth pass, which could be bought for six or 12 months at a time, was among a number of changes announced by B.C. Transit in March. The cost for students is now $45 a month.

Students and the Superintendent attended Transit meetings, as did Trustee Paynter over months.

The motion below came forward as a result of Trustee Rob Paynter’s motion at February Operations Policy and Planning Standing Committee meeting, at 10 C on the agenda. (Committee members appointed by the Chair have a vote on a Standing Committee; other Trustees may attend and debate, but not vote. OPPs: Leonard, McNally, Paynter, Watters, and Loring-Kuhanga ex officio.)

Paynter’s motion: C. Paynter: That the Board write to the Premier and Minister of Education requesting that the BC Transit Act be amended to include appointment of a Trustee of one of the School Districts falling within the CRD as a member [amended from “Director”] of the regional transit commission for the Greater Victoria metropolitan area. / Carried. For:  McNally, Paynter, Watters    Abstain: Leonard

  • Leonard: How would this trustee be accountable to 3 School Districts? [61, 62, 63]

The motion carried in Committee so went forward to the Board agenda, D D February 28. (A Trustee can bring a motion to the Board agenda even if it fails in Committee but  it’s an indicator of support if it carried in Committee obviously. Though people do change their minds in the interim, so you never know.)

The motion carried unanimously (8/8 present – I could not be at that meeting) at the Board meeting. Vote record here.
