Policy SubCommittee: Read The Fine Print / Slash and Burn

The Policy Subcommittee, current Trustee members Chair Watters (self-appointed) and Vice Chair Leonard (along with the Superintendent and Secretary-Treasurer) have been busy .

A new work flow document was provided [P 11 agenda]  to Trustees “for information” – meaning, no one asked Trustees who aren’t on the Committee:

To support the work of the committee, the Secretary Treasurer coordinated review of all School District 61 policies. The result of this review is presented in the attached spreadsheet. The Policy SubCommittee’s work is flowing, in part, from this document, and as such the SubCommittee wanted to provide it to Trustees for information.

Pages 12-28 of the Operations Policy and Planning Standing Commitee agenda November 9 provide a document that lays out plans for revisions, deletions, moves to an administrative handbook, and other actions in regard to existing Policies and Regulations.  It’s comprehensive and it’s apparent that a lot of work went into it. The unfortunate thing is, if it’s printed for reference, or reduced on a screen, it’s unreadable.

So I’ve provided it in list for you (and me)  here. You’re welcome.

Obviously, some of these items should never have been “Policies”, like all the job descriptions
that wound up in Policy with approval from previous iterations of the Board. So removing those is a good thing.
But where will they go? To a guarded  HR handbook that you and I can’t access?
Right now, job descriptions are not available to Trustees or the public.

The org chart provided by the Superintendent isn’t all that helpful when one tries to understand how many Directors, Associates of various desriptions, Managers, and District Principals there are now or will be created. SD61 is reportedly “no longer a linear reporting organization“,so that’s an added challenge.

Or

Work Flow Plan provided by Policy SubCommittee to the rest of us:

There are implications for practice in any Policy change. You may approve of all of these or you may have concerns.Concerns will be raised in debate, certainly.

Policies under consideration for change are on nearly every agenda. Please review, and send in comments. If you address a letter-not just an email – to the whole Board it will appear in the Correspondence section of the agenda. Public debate is difficult at this point as you can only watch the meetings on YouTube and send in your questions in email, which isn’t very dynamic to say the least. Standing Committees
are supposed to provide extensive dialogue with stakeholders / the public.
