The Minister has made progress on most mandate points, which is encouraging. But we have all heard public announcements that there will be no new funding for public education. So what does “enhancement” mean in this context? It’s a carefully worded point. I wonder how funding can be “enhanced” if it’s not increased. Maybe in […]

Parent: No one asked the parents….Someone told me that SD61 had contracted an expert to assist them with moving forward with this inclusion policy, and that she had said that even 5 minutes of meaningful inclusion is better than none. Agreed. But what happens to the other 355 minutes? Suggest put neurotypicals in [child with low incidence designation]’s classroom as home room, instead of the other way around. McNally re Funding Formula letter of support from SD61 Board [did not support in vote] : We needed to have done much more public engagement, ie open houses, focus groups on an issue that very likely will bring significant and profound change. The majority of people I have spoken with have no idea how profile funding will work or what the implications are.
Public goods should be funded by public money through sufficient taxes to provide optimum operation. Both public education and public health – hospitals – are critical public goods, yet both are dependent on fundraising or the personally favoured cause of wealthy philanthropists. Education and hospitals should not have to turn to bake sales and golf tournaments for funding.
